New development for ReSurge Africa: Sierra Leone

Reconstructive Surgery at Holy Spirit Hospital (Makeni)

Following a disastrous civil war, Sierra Leone lacks basic medical care. Now at peace, but without resources, the country requires help to train local people to treat disfigurement and disability caused by the war as well as by disease and malformation.

Conditions are desperate and ReSurge Africa is committed to help.

Holy Spirit is a small, well run hospital in Makeni (a town more or less in the centre of the country). This hospital is the nucleus of our efforts. Collaboration with the Italian charity ‘Fondazione Don Gnocchi’ has allowed us to make a start in establishing care for the maimed and damaged patients desperately needing reconstructive surgery.

British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) has funded this charity's work in Sierra Leone and we are extremely grateful for their generosity.

There remains much to be done, but the focus is directed towards training and enabling local health professionals to treat these patients.
