We have established a sustainable reconstructive surgery service in Ghana. We have initiated and built West Africa's first Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns unit. We have trained specialist staff and provided the equipment and expertise that has helped to transform many thousands of lives. This Unit in Accra is self-sustaining and run by the Ghanaian Ministry of Health under director Albert Paintsil.
We are now in turn helping the Accra Unit to train and support others. It will play a vital role in creating the next unit in Sierra Leone. That illustrates the unique value of this charity.
With your help, this service can support many thousands more people throughout West Africa.
Training costs money!
Trainee surgeons have to be supported for at least two years either in the UK or another country that is capable of carrying out the training. Total training expenses cost in the order of £25,000 per trainee surgeon per year. Training an African physiotherapist in the UK for six months costs £12,000. At the moment we have two Ghanaian surgeons awaiting training in reconstructive techniques. It is also our intention to commence training Sierra Leonean surgeons in Ghana.
There are several ways that you could get involved.
- You could make a one-off donation
- You could set up a bankers order for a regular contribution (This is particularly helpful, since it makes budgeting easier).
- You could set up a fundraiser account through the website, and motivate your friends to help raise money through biking, running, a triathlon, a bungee jump etc
- You could set up a memorial donation (as a unique tribute to a loved one)
- As a medical professional, you could volunteer time in Ghana, to teach, train and supervise.
